When you’re a kid, and you aren’t trusted to use a stove by yourself, then sometimes keeping easy to prepare, packaged, microwaveable food in the house is a necessary evil. When you’re an adult, there’s no reason not to prepare fresh, healthy food for yourself every day.

A lot of people avoid cooking because they have the impression that it takes a lot of time, it’s too difficult for them to do every day, or it’s too expensive. Nothing could be further from the truth! Learning to grill fresh fish, or prepare whole grain rice in a rice cooker is just as cheap and easy as opening a can of dead, processed vegetables and heating it up in a pan, and they taste better. Pan-Grilled salmon

-        1 skinless salmon filet

-        1 tsp. of a non-hydrogenated butter substitute, or 1 Tbsp. of olive oil

-        ¼ tsp. of turmeric

-        Salt and pepper to taste

This recipe works with best with a cast iron grill pan. Thaw the fish according to the instructions on the package. Heat the pan as you normally would for a cast iron vessel. Rinse the salmon with clean water, sprinkle the turmeric on top, and set it in the grill pan on medium-low heat. As the fish starts to cook, place the butter substitute or olive oil on top. The fish should cook just long enough for the flesh to become opaque, exact cooking times will vary depending on the thickness of the filet. Thin filets may not need to be flipped during cooking, while thick filets might need to be turned once to cook fully. Once the fish is done grilling, sprinkle it with salt and pepper before serving on a bun as a salmon burger, or alongside a salad, steamed vegetables, a whole grain pilaf, or other healthy side dishes.
